KPRC Houston recently reported on talk show star and media tycoon Oprah Winfrey’s weight loss secret, a secret that she says has assisted her in shedding over thirty pounds. Winfrey says that the difference maker in her pursuit of a leaner physique has been her weight loss buddy, who has been going through a weight loss program by her side. That buddy, she told ABC, is her life partner, Stedman Graham. By having a weight loss partner, it has been easier for Winfrey to stay on track. “We do hold each other accountable,” she told ABC News. The weight loss program Winfrey has been going through is Weight Watchers, for which she has been a spokeswoman since 2015. Researchers, however, seem to believe that enlisting a partner is beneficial in losing weight across the board, regardless of the program. The American Psychological Association notes that studies show that individuals who went through weight loss programs together saw more permanent results than those who went through them alone. In fact, two thirds of those who went through a program with at least one friend did not gain any weight back in the next six months, compared to only a fourth of those who went through the program individually. Wellness consultant Michelle Maidenburg says that, when it comes to health, the “single most important factor is having a support system.” She says that having a partner is so effective when it comes to weight loss because it provides support, motivation, and, as Oprah said, accountability. These factors enable an individual to better adhere to a weight loss plan, whether it entails diet, exercise, or a combination of the two. So, if you are embarking on a weight loss journey, reach out to friends, family members, or loved ones, and get them involved. It could make a difference that everyone will be thankful for.
