Few things are better than the first couple weeks of warm weather after a long winter. Although the sun provides enormous health benefits, like anything, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Our skin can take a hit if not properly cared for in the summer climate. Fortunately, we pulled eight easy and practical ways to protect the largest organ in the body, while still enjoying all the wonderful benefits of the sun this summer.
1. Stay Hydrated
Our bodies rely on water — that’s why it’s always the number one action item to staying healthy. Our skin is one of the first indicators of whether or not we are properly hydrated. When the summer months arrive, we often forget we need to increase our H2o intake. Extra sun exposure during the summer depletes the water from our bodies faster than any other time of the year, so it’s important to always keep a water bottle close by to keep hydrated. Fresh fruit and green tea can also help to flush toxins and replenish your collagen, in addition to offering flavorful hydration!
2. Apply Sunscreen
Our mothers have been saying it all our lives: Don’t forget your sunscreen! And, they are right. Our skin needs UV protection year-round, but even more critically in the summer months. The sun can burn and age our skin fast. Use a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, and make sure to apply every two to four hours. To avoid oil build-up, use a sunscreen with fluid-based oil. A fluid-based oil sunscreen applies more water than oil — adding hydration to your skin.
3. Cleanse Your Skin
In the summer, the outdoors are filled with people, pollution, sweat, and dirt. Our skin gets exposed to all of these elements, so it’s important to adamantly clean your skin morning and night with a gentle cleanser. Search for one containing ingredients like aloe, papaya, or cucumber. These ingredients aid in hydrating your skin and help to gently remove dead skins cells.
4. Moisturize Your Skin
Ideally, you should be moisturizing every day throughout the year. In the winter, skin is usually dry so we choose a moisturizer that is oil-based. In the summer, however, we are exposed to a hot and humid climate — especially in Texas — so skin should be moisturized with a water-based solution after showering. Doing so while the skin is still damp helps to lock in water molecules and keep your skin ultra hydrated. For easy, added protection, use a moisturizer with SPF!
Take an evening once a week to relax, sip a glass of wine, and gently remove all those extra and unwanted dead skin cells. Exfoliating helps to remove impurities from the skin and allow for proper hydration from moisturizing. Skin becomes more vulnerable to harmful UV rays after exfoliating, so be sure to use an exfoliant at night on clean skin.
We all love to have a sun tan. Unfortunately, it is all in vain. A sun tan is just damaged skin, and offers no benefit to our skin. To remove sun damage and keep a healthy glow, use a homemade face mask rich in antioxidant ingredients like honey, lemon juice, and cucumber.
7. Keep it Cool
Carry a facial mist spray to lightly spritz your skin when it is over-exposed to the sun. It’s refreshing and hydrating, and can last all day long.
